XStick(TM) Notation Palette
The Notation Palette is the toolbox for manipulating the "Staff Tab(TM)"
notation on the Notation Canvas. It consists of several rows of buttons
and a matrix of finger/duration buttons that select the note symbol for
placement on the staff.
- First Row:
- Open File (File Folder Icon) - Opens a new XStick(TM) file.
- Save File (Floppy Disk Icon) - Opens the Save As dialog.
- Print (Printer Icon) - Print score to EPS file(s)
- Move (Horizontal Arrows) - Move staff components horizontally.
- Delete (Scissors Icon) - Remove staff components from score.
- Free Text (Paper/Pencil Icon) - Add free text to score.
All components when placed have a "handle". As the mouse is moved over a
component in the various edit modes, it and all of it's components will
change colors. This includes accidental notation, dots, ledger lines, and
the fret/string notation. Moving or deleting will affect all the
highlighted components.
- Second Row:
- Refinger (Pointing Hand Icon) - Changes selected note fingering.
- Fret/String (BiColor Box With Number 10) - Define fret/string for note.
- Transpose (Vertical Arrows) - Transpose up and down the scale.
- Duration (Quarter Note --> Eighth Note) - Change note duration.
- Tie (Two Notes Tied Icon) - Add a tie symbol between notes.
- Bend (Pyramid Over a Number Icon) - Add a bend symbol to a note.
When placing a tie, move the mouse toward the first note, when the note
changes color, click on the desired start point and release the mouse
button. Move the mouse to the second note and when it changes color click
on the desired end point and release the button. The arc will be
associated with both notes and will move if either is moved, as well as
deleted if either is deleted.
- Third Row:
- Clear Accidental Mode (Blank Button) - Turns off accidental mode.
- Flat (Flat Symbol Icon) - Activates flatted note placement.
- Natural (Natural Symbol Icon) - Activates natural note placement.
- Sharp (Sharp Symbol Icon) - Activates sharp note placement.
For all of these, the actual displayed note marking will be
determined by the current key signature.
- Fourth Row - These buttons serve a dual purpose. They place rests
and serve as a column guide for the note/finger matrix below.

- Middle Finger (Diamond Symbol) - Select appropriate duration in the
