The XStick fretboard mimics the actual fretboard of the Stick®. I try
to approximate the relative size of the strings based on the tuning.
Tapping on the strings with the mouse can cause up to three things to
happen, depending on your platform and how you have the program
configured:
The woodgrain of your fretboard can be customized to your liking under the "Edit Defaults" item of the file menu also. I've included teak.gif in the bitmaps directory. This file is a 100x240, 256 color gif file. If you can find a nice woodgrain image to your liking and crop it to this size so it tiles well, you can use it instead. You can really use any gif you'd like and come up with some pretty wild virtual Sticks®. If you do come up with some nice ones, send them to me and I'll include them in the next revision.
The fretboard also displays the open string tuning to the left of each string and the fret numbers above the frets. The inlays can also be customized to your liking and note "cheat" dots can be placed on the fretboard. Tunings can be changed quickly, so you can experiment with all sorts of exotic tunings without the muss and fuss of restringing and setting up your real Stick®. (One caveat, if you have a Staff Tab(TM) score composed in the canvas below, a retune will clear out all the string/fret notation in your score, as they will no longer be valid. Be sure to save your score before playing with the tunings.)
The fretboard will also display chords and scales as selected with the
radio buttons below the fretboard. These can be displayed in either the
"root" format, or with the actual note names. Again the color of the
displayed notes can be customized by the user.
